Today is A-muse me Monday where I post a free video for everyone to watch my art journaling process. I like to call on my Muse or Muses every day but I make it a point to call on them on Monday and start my week off with some creative play and exploration. I believe that whatever creative endeavor we are exploring as long as we are showing up on a regular basis our Muse will show up along side us to keep us moving forward, free flowing with ideas and inspiration. One of my favorite books to read about working as an artist and how to invoke your Muse is The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. He talks a lot about the Muse and the techniques he uses as well as the techniques used by many other professional artist. In his book he quotes the "noble effect of heaven-sent madness" by Socrates, in Plato Phaedrus on the Muse:
"The third type of possession and madness is possession by the Muses. When this seizes upon a gentle and virgin soul it rouses it to inspired expression in lyric and other sorts of poetry, and glorifies countless deeds of the heroes of old for in instruction of posterity. But if a man comes to the door of poetry untouched by the madness of the Muses, believing that technique alone will make him a good poet, he and his sane compositions never reach perfection, but are utterly eclipsed by the performances of the inspired madman."
This brings me to think about one of the magnets I have on my refrigerator. "Art should disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed" (author unknown) It can feel very uncomfortable to embark on a journey of creativity and art. There is so much fear and resistance and excuse not to do it. It is way more comfortable to stay on your Island of safety where you have been taught to live in the the tic tock world of mundane work. Working for the man, working for your retirement, working for exhalation after this life (what??) yes that's a thing. But in my experience, once that Muse starts pulling on your heartstrings, it is more uncomfortable not to be creative. I didn't realize it until I began listening to my heart. My heart pulls me toward a creative, curious, light as a feather, happy learning about everything, wonderful life. Give A-muse me Monday a try and see if you can invoke your Muse and start your creative life.
